Serbia is experiencing an exceptionally dry summer, with prolonged high temperatures and severe hydrological stress reducing access to safe drinking water in several communities. In and around Kraljevo, rural communities relying on small village water systems and individual wells are particularly affected. An informal Roma settlement of around 300 people has been identified as lacking reliable access to drinking water, while several additional rural settlements are considered highly vulnerable to shortages. Extreme heat and low water availability are also increasing risks for vulnerable households in Novi Sad and Plandište, particularly older people, children, persons with disabilities and people with reduced mobility.
Through the ACT Alliance Rapid Response Fund, USD 37,698 has been allocated for a three-month response from 20 August to 20 November 2026, implemented by Ecumenical Humanitarian Organisation (EHO) and Philanthropy, Charitable Foundation of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The two ACT Alliance members will work in affected communities in Kraljevo, Novi Sad and Plandište, building on their long-standing operational presence and relationships with local authorities and communities.
The response aims to support households facing the greatest barriers to accessing safe water. Around 400 vulnerable households will receive emergency drinking water, while water-quality testing will be carried out in selected villages around Kraljevo. The findings will be used to develop recommendations and engage local authorities on more sustainable access to safe water.
