The following is an example of how this system of reducing risk could be used. It can be applied virtually any threat you identify. Sometimes the nature of the threat makes prevention a challenge and in this situation you can prioritize reactions strategies.

• Take the time to assess the risk prior to any public event
• Try to never attend events alone
• Document any negative behaviour and try to identify the perpetrators
• Keep your personal information secure, especially contact details and address
• Consider your exposure on social media
• Remain aware of your surroundings, especially after an event until you are somewhere safe. Never be predictable.

• Have a check-in with colleague or friend before and after and event to confirm you are safe. If no contact, ensure a response plan is put into effect (i.e. contact police)
• Ensure you have access to a counsellor as stress and fear will have a psychological effect over time, or in response to an incident.
• Inform other advocates of threats and suspected/known sources to assist others
• After an incident consider altering how you advocate and change routines.
