If the LGBTI+ community represents one thing it is diversity. Similarly, around the globe the response to increasing awareness of the LGBTI+ community is also diverse. Many cultural, religious or conservative attitudes still negatively affect LGBTI+ lives and their, health, safety, prosperity and equality. Yet, acceptance is improving. Even where the ‘official’ attitude remains intolerant, acceptance at the local level is increasing. Still, more than the other genders, LGBTI+ people need to assess their risks clearly, and their strengths or support structures to counter these threats. Often, LGBTI+ people will need to make the most difficult decisions of all genders in relation to their health, safety and well-being.

Even for those LGBTI+ people living in the most ‘progressive’ cultures, who can feel free to be the most open about the lives and status, crime statistics are not falling. In some cases, attacks are increasing. This makes relaxing your personal security awareness even more dangerous. For those in conservative cultures where acceptance is low or non-existent, security awareness is a daily fact of life. For all, constant awareness of your surroundings, maintaining your risk mitigation strategies and keeping your digital and public footprint safe if key. Also, never disregard your mental health and be aware when your stress levels are getting dangerously high.
