Purpose

The LWF is a communion of 148 member churches in 7 regions, living and working together for a just, peaceful and reconciled world.

Position environment and dimensions

Represents the LWF Communion Office regionally and acts as the primary entry point for accompaniment, advice and support to and from MCs.

Main duties

Under the leadership of the General Secretary, and in relation with her-his region of responsibility, the Regional Secretary for Latin America, the Caribbean and North America:

  • Provides pastoral accompaniment through regular visits to the MCs.
  • Identifies and promotes the development of church leadership regionally and globally, both clergy and lay.
  • Facilitates relationships between MCs, mitigates tensions and manages conflicts as needed.
  • Monitors and develops LWF orientations, strategy and objectives.

Purpose

The Department for World Service (DWS) is responsible for carrying out diakonal response to humanitarian emergencies and human needs on behalf of the Lutheran World Federation – a Communion of Churches (LWF).

In pursuance of its responsibility and based on its strategy, DWS

  • Operates together with and on behalf of the LWF member churches;
  • Provides support of refugees, returnees, internally displaced people, their host communities and communities at risk, emphasizing livelihoods, quality services, protection and social cohesion;
  • Establishes and runs country programs and emergency operations;
  • Engages in cooperation and partnership with governmental and non-governmental organizations, the relevant United Nations agencies and other structures involved in humanitarian and development programs as they link to the WS mandate and represents the LWF in the ACT Alliance.

 

Quality programming, learning, and accountability at all levels are key commitments in the Global Strategy of DWS.  The main purpose of this position is to develop and support the implementation of these commitments, with particular responsibility for the digitalization of data management across LWF Country Programs.

 

In particular, the position holder:

  • Leads the conceptualization and technical implementation of digital data collection and management across World Service;
  • Enhances the learning and capacity development of LWF World Service in Country Programs in digitized data management and PMER;

Required Qualifications

Digital data management

Design and facilitate implementation of road map for digital data management for LWF Country Programs.

Purpose

 

LWF is a faith-based organization with a strong commitment to the human rights and a long-lasting engagement with the UN.

The Department for Theology, Mission and Justice (DTMJ) is primarily responsible for programs and themes geared towards supporting the presence and witness of the member churches (MCs) of the Lutheran World Federation – a Communion of Churches (LWF) globally and locally. DTMJ also houses the advocacy unit of the LWF.

The Action for Justice is a team located in DTMJ under the leadership of the Head of Advocacy and dedicated to represent and promote LWF programmatic work carried out worldwide at local and national levels on the following themes: human rights, gender justice, climate justice and interfaith and peace. Using the Local to Global methodology, the Action for Justice team ensures that issues related to these themes are developed in MCs and in World Service (WS) country programs and reported through global mechanisms focusing on the United Nations and its High Commissioners for refugees and human rights, in a highly political international environment.

The main purpose of the position is to focus on advocacy for gender justice in close cooperation with the unit for theological studies, ensuring advocacy is rooted in Lutheran theology.

In consistence with LWF policies, Assembly and Council resolutions the purpose of this position is to contribute to enhanced capacity and awareness on gender justice and women´s human rights in member churches and World Service country programs.

In her-his role, the incumbent will handle, share and safeguard information relevant to the theme, provide logistics in organising travels and events.

The Global Funding Team (GFT) in World Service is responsible for securing and managing new funding opportunities as part of World Services’ efforts to diversify its funding portfolio.
During the 2013-2018 Global Strategy this work has mainly focused on securing grants from institutional donors (including US Government and EU) in an effort to provide funding for the World Service country program operations, in particular those associated with refugees and IDPs.
As part of more intensified efforts to further diversify funding opportunities during the new 2019-2024 Global Strategy, the GFT intends to broaden its funding portfolio beyond institutional grants and pursue other funding sources and partnerships (including foundations, private, corporate, individual and other sources) in Switzerland and in newly emerging markets.
There will be increased collaboration with the LWF’s Department for Theology, Mission & Justice’s (DTMJ’s) Action for Justice unit, and in particular collaboration with the Resource Mobilisation Coordinator in DTMJ and where possible/relevant seek funding which will benefit both departments.
A large part of the time will be spent identifying new opportunities which will include mapping and identification of potential donors, followed by building, nurturing and developing those relationships. Purpose

DPC oversees and supports the work of the LWF in various areas including in Resourcing.

The main purpose of this position is to support LWF mission and strategy in developing, securing and managing institutional un-earmarked funding for the Communion Office (CO), through coordination and engagement with a number of LWF funding partners. The incumbent shall also convene the Staff Working Team on Resource Mobilization and oversee donor relationship management for a selected number of donors.

Purpose of this Position

The Department for Theology, Mission and Justice (DTMJ) is primarily responsible for programs and themes geared towards supporting the presence and witness of the member churches (MCs) of the Lutheran World Federation – a Communion of Churches (LWF) globally and locally.  DTMJ also houses the advocacy unit of the LWF.

DTMJ develops theological reflection that articulates the understanding of being Lutheran churches in communion. It discerns and addresses issues that represent theological challenges to the churches today and require global reflection. It supports, equips and strengthens LWF MCs in holistic mission.

DTMJ programs are related to Theological Studies, Church in Mission and Action for Justice and covering a wide area of themes.

The main purpose of this position is to provide timely and efficient administrative support to the staff of the department, to facilitate the implementation of the DTMJ’s and LWF’s activities.

In collaboration with the other DTMJ administrative assistants the incumbent will provide logistics in organising travels and events, handle, share and safeguard information, and ensure staff members receive the necessary support.

Position Environment and Dimensions

Purpose

DTMJ programs are related to Theological Studies, Churches in Mission and Action for Justice and cover a wide area of themes, among them building the capacity of member churches and their projects, and contribute to the LWF communion building. The purpose of the work done by the team “Churches in Mission” is to support, equip and strengthen LWF MCs in their holistic mission through reinforcing their leadership capacities and organizational / structural development, including youth and women.

The incumbent is responsible for projects initiated and implemented by MCs but coordinated by the LWF, following LWF guidelines. Hence, s-he is responsible to gather and screen project briefs and is instrumental in monitoring the implementation and presenting the state of affairs and new project for approval by the Committee for MC projects. S-he assists MCs in their efforts to plan, organize and implement LWF-related projects through project management capacity building. S-he cooperates with the Program Executive for Diakonia and Development who oversees the global program work with MCs and ecumenical partners.

Required qualifications:

  • University degree or equivalent in development studies, social studies, economics or business administration.
  • Training/Diploma in Project Management.

  • Excellent written and spoken English.  Working knowledge of German, French, Spanish is desirable.

Organisational Development Support

Frames organisational needs and develops capacity building activities in MCs on project management accordingly.

Provides coordination for the MC’s projects under her/his responsibility, including conceptual and methodological development.

Coordinates and supports the selection, planning, monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and closure of the respective project work.

Leads the communication with funding partners regarding the programs, in collaboration with the DTMJ Resource Mobilization Officer.

Coordinates further fund-raising efforts for the program, in collaboration with the DTMJ Support Team and Resource Mobilization partners.

Replaces the Program Executive for Diakonia in charge of the “Waking the Giant” program in case of absence.
