The Country Director is the leader-manager for LWR’s office in Syria and the official spokesperson for LWR in the country. Her/his primary responsibility is to develop both short-term and long-term strategies for recovery and sustainable development, provide direction and vision to LWR operations, office staff and coordinate with peer international NGOs in a manner that comports with LWR’s vision, values, and strategy and acquisition of  donor  funding  to build, sustain and expand country program. The Lutheran World Federation, Department for Mission and Development (LWF/DMD) seeks a comprehensive approach for the accompaniment of member churches in building capacities for holistic mission encompassing proclamation, Diakonia and advocacy for justice.

The main purpose of this position is to lead, monitor and control the financial management of the department and be responsible for its planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting (PMER). The General Secretary (GS) leads the ACT Alliance and its secretariat from Geneva overseeing 26 staff in Amman, Bangkok, Nairobi, San Salvador and New York. As GS, you will be the face of the Alliance leading external relations and communicating the policy agenda. You will work closely with the Board and staff on the development and implementation of the Alliance’s strategic vision, plan, policies and programmes that seek to bring transformative change to those most affected by poverty and injustice.

Internally, you will secure the commitment of members, uniting and motivating them to come together as one organisation that makes use of the enormous assets of ecumenical and faith-based organisations working together.

You will develop a model for funding to secure its financial sustainability, increasing the proportion that comes from external sources, and deliver a strategy to adapt to the new challenges of a world that is changing fast. Leading the Alliance through these changes, combined with your understanding of global trends, will mean ACT is credibly positioned with international bodies such as the UN and the World Bank to create positive and sustainable change in the lives of poor and marginalised people through humanitarian aid, development and advocacy initiatives.

Essentials

We expect you to be able to demonstrate that you:

  • Can manage ecumenical relations with churches and other organisations within and beyond the Alliance.
  • Are able to understand the priorities and craft strategies that secure the commitment of staff and 140 member churches and specialised ministries around the world, large and small, to create a universally-supported joint vision across of all parts of the Alliance: ACT members, ACT forums, ACT governance, the secretariat and related expert working groups and communities of practice.
  • Lead the staff towards the achievement of the strategic and annual plans.
  • Have the diplomacy to take others’ views into account—and to push back in the interests of the Alliance where necessary.
  • Are able to build high-level relationships with global bodies including the United Nations and the World Bank as well as other partners and donors.
  • Can present a compelling case for funding from members, as well as raising funds from external sources who understand the value of Alliance members working together.

Candidates are expected to share and be comfortable with the Christian faith, as expressed through membership in a member church of the World Council of Churches or the Lutheran World Federation.

Qualifications/ Education

  • Masters level or equivalent.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential and fluency in French, Spanish or other international languages would be a distinctive advantage.

ACT Alliance is looking for an experienced Global Humanitarian Coordinator to lead its international humanitarian work. The position is Geneva based with an expectation for up to 25% international travel.

Major functions

The Global Humanitarian Coordinator leads the ACT Alliance work in emergency preparedness and response and advices ACT’s humanitarian policy and advocacy agenda. This involves regular interaction with humanitarian directors of ACT Alliance members, representing ACT on relevant policy issues and managing an effective emergency preparedness and response, including fundraising for major humanitarian appeals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensures alliance-wide emergency preparedness
  • Coordinates the ACT Alliance response to an emergency and leads the programme on humanitarian response
  • Develops partnerships and fundraises for joint member-led initiatives, including the emergency appeals
  • Represents ACT Alliance in global humanitarian coordination
  • Ensures adequate policies, tools and guidelines in support of effective emergency responses
  • Advises ACT’s humanitarian policy and advocacy agenda and in coordination with the Global Advocacy and Policy Coordinator supports the implementation of the global advocacy strategy
  • Leads the ACT secretariat humanitarian team and supports staff based in regions
  • Supports the ACT Alliance working bodies relevant to humanitarian response, humanitarian policy and advocacy work
  • Communicates internally and externally on issues relevant to ACT Alliance’s humanitarian engagement
  • Supports the General Secretary, the Director and Head of Strategy and Partnerships in external representational roles pertinent to the role

  • Ability to engage effectively and flexibly in a multi-stakeholder, faith based, membership working environment
  • Relevant academic degree with excellent communication skills

About us

Brot für die Welt, Christian Aid, Church of Sweden, ICCO Cooperation and Norwegian Church Aid, as part of the ACT Alliance, are taking a new, energetic approach to our work tackling inequality and poverty in Southern Africa. We are looking to recruit a manager for the initial phase of the change process as we move towards closer ways of working.

About the role

The purpose of the role is to facilitate the process of developing a new entity for ACT in South Africa and to provide organisational development support during the initial phase of the pilot.
